The Northern Territory Government’s Balanced Environment Strategy Discussion Draft has been developed to ensure the Territory’s environmental credentials are strong now and into the future.
The Discussion Draft was open for public consultation from 1 February to 18 March 2016.
The Chief Minister wrote to a diverse array of stakeholders including Land Councils, environmental groups, peak industry bodies and inviting feedback on the Discussion Draft.
Community information sessions were held across the Territory.
Individual meetings were also held with interested stakeholders that wanted to talk about the Discussion Draft and everyone had the option of completing a short online survey on the Discussion Draft.
The Balanced Environment Strategy Discussion Draft goes further in the range of issues covered in the Framing the Future balanced environment objectives.
The draft accommodates the progress of the NT Government’s environmental regulatory reform agenda following Dr Allan Hawke’s 'Report of the Independent Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracturing in the Northern Territory' and 'Review of the Northern Territory Environmental Assessment and Approval Processes.
To read more information about Dr Allan Hawke’s report go to the Hydraulic Fracturing Inquiry website.
In 2014 the Territory Government engaged Dr Allan Hawke AC to conduct a review of the Northern Territory’s Environmental Assessment and Approval Processes (the Hawke II Review).
To read the Hawke II Review review go to the Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment website.
Six goals have been identified to support our vision for a balanced environment.
The Northern Territory Government will provide leadership and work in partnership to implement policies and actions to achieve these goals by utilising five key areas of influence.
To complement the goals and Government’s areas of influence, nine principles have been identified to guide decision-making to safeguard, responsibly use and manage our environment.
The feedback which was received through the public consultation period for the Balanced Environment Strategy Discussion Draft is currently being considered.
