Canteen Creek Airstrip facelift completed
The Canteen Creek Airstrip, located 260km south east of Tennant Creek and servicing the nearby community of Owairtilla, has been upgraded and sealed.
The completion of the $2.5 million upgrade now allows planes to land on the airstrip in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day.
This upgrade improves safety, allows better access to communities and reduces disruption to services during periods of rain. The improvements also provide reliable access to remote communities for freight, passenger transport and most importantly, medical evacuations.
The airstrip has been extended to 1200m long and 23m wide.
Further additions to the airstrip include taxiway and apron sealing, new line marking and installation of aerodrome signage.
An alternative strip was built adjacent to the works during the construction period for the community to access necessary services.
The Owairtilla Community constructed the alternative strip, funded by the Northern Territory Government at $530,000, with 100 per cent Indigenous involvement.
The works to the Canteen Creek Aerodrome have been completed by local Katherine business Craven Diesel Services Pty Ltd.
