Department of Correctional Services installs the Field of Light
Department of Correctional Services’ Community Work parties installed the 50,000 solar-powered light spheres to create the Field of Light exhibition in Uluru.
Designed by international artist Bruno Munro, more than 50,000 slender stems crowned with radiant frosted-glass spheres connected by illuminated optical fibre were installed by the Alice Springs Community Work Parties.
Four officers and 28 prisoners worked over a four week period to install 15 tonnes of lighting, rising at four am each morning.
The work entailed placing the light stem in a predetermined pattern and connecting the optical fibre in unison with other lights.
This was accomplished ahead of schedule with the Field of Light design team commenting on the group’s close working relationship and their commitment to achieving the task in trying conditions.
Officers and prisoners lived in tents for the duration of their stay and were rotated weekly.
The Field of Light exhibition opened on 1 April 2016 and runs until 31 March 2017.
