Strategic relations

The Department of the Chief Minister coordinates and supports the Northern Territory’s participation in the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

COAG is the peak intergovernmental forum in Australia and is chaired by the Prime Minister. 

Members of COAG are the Prime Minister, State and Territory Premiers and Chief Ministers and the President of the Australian Local Government Association.

The role of COAG is to promote policy reforms that are of national significance, or which need coordinated action by all Australian governments. Go to the COAG website for more information.

The Department of the Chief Minister also coordinates and supports the Northern Territory’s participation in COAG’s sister forum, the Council for the Australian Federation (CAF). 

CAF is an intergovernmental forum for State and Territory leaders in Australia. Go to the the CAF website for more information.

The Department of the Chief Minister also work to build and strengthen our relationships, particularly trade links, with the nations of the Asian region.
