As the First Minister’s department, the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet (CM&C) plays a critical role across government, driving coordination and leadership to support the delivery and implementation of whole-of-government priorities, including:
- developing, influencing and providing coordinated, timely and expert strategic policy advice;
- leadership in meeting key Government objectives through policy reform;
- facilitating, coordinating and supporting economic growth and regional development opportunities, including driving projects of significance and maximising strategic investment into the Territory;
- coordinating whole-of-government responses to emerging issues and matters of strategic importance to the Territory;
- positioning the interests of the Territory at a state, national and international level through strategic reforms, negotiation and engagement with the three tiers of government, industry and community sectors;
- positioning the interests of the Territory as a critical defence and national security hub for the Australian Defence Force and our other allied partners;
- strengthening our regions by providing central coordination and support across the Northern Territory Public Sector and industry to drive regional economic diversity and growth;
- shares a leadership role in emergency management and recovery across all hazards, from natural disasters to anthropogenic events (i.e. oil spills and terror or security events)
- coordinate whole-of-government support, engagement and advice on strategic Aboriginal Affairs matters through land and sea strategies, to drive outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians.
CM&C supports the Office of the Chief Minister and its relevant portfolio Ministers, Cabinet, Cabinet Sub-Committees, Executive Council and the Administrator (where required) to ensure the functions of Executive Government operate efficiently and effectively.

CM&C also provides shared services and corporate support to the Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment, Department of Treasury and Finance, Office of the Chief Minister and Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
